Ten Books I Will Have In My Beach Bag This Summer

I'm participating in today's Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.  This week's prompt is:

Ten Books I Will Have In My Beach Bag This Summer

I have never been totally clear on what a "beach read" is.  I love the beach, don't get me wrong.  But, to me, books are either good or not, regardless of the season, or whether or not a large body of water is near me.  I think for most people it has something to do with being more on the lighter side, and probably fiction?  Yes?  I'll go with that.  And with that extremely loose definition, here are my summer beach read recommendations:

10. The Wrath and The Dawn by Renee Ahdieh
I want to read this book so badly, no beach could distract me from its pages.

9. Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
It's Maas.  Maas and the beach are two of my favorite things, so boom.  Beach read.

8. An Ember In The Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
With all the hype around this one, it's sure to either make or break your beach day.

7. The Heir by Kiera Cass
Cass has definitely perfected light, fluffy fiction.  So there you go.

6. The Design Mom Book by Gabrielle Stanley Blair
Spring and summer are times to organize and clean for me, so this book on how to live with kids in a functional and aesthetically appealing way is right up my summer alley.

5.  5 to 1 by Holly Bodger
This book feels like it will give me wanderlust.  I've always wanted to go to India.  And since summertime often equals travel, it's a good match.

4. Of Dreams and Rust by Sarah Fine
I loved the Phantom of the Opera retelling Of Metal And Wishes, and have been looking forward to its sequel for months!  This August it will finally be here.  So you know what I'll be doing the first week of August.

3. The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness
What if you aren't the chosen one?  This book sounds witty, funny, and absolutely delightful.  Kind of like Ron Weasely, and all the other non-chosen-ones out there.

2. Court of Fives by Kate Elliott
If excitement and adventure are your beachy cup of tea, look no further.  This one sounds dazzling.

1. Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas
This one technically doesn't come out until September 1st, but that's still basically summer, right?  Hopefully I'll snag an ARC and be reading this earlier anyway (PLEASE, BLOOMSBURY, I'LL DO ANYTHING) so its spot on my list is merited.

What's on your beach read list?  Also, who here will actually be spending time at the beach this summer??

  • I think your definition works. I don't get beach reads, though, because I wouldn't take a book to the beach with me. I'd much rather be in the water if I'm at the beach. I can read any time, but I can't swim in the ocean any time.

Yeah, I totally get that. I don't read much at the beach, though I do enjoy reading by swimming pools. It's weird, I know. :)

  • A Court of Thorns and Roses is on my list for summer too. I want to read Queen of Shadows but I will likely be waiting till September for that one! I can't wait though!

Ooh! A Phantom of the Opera retelling. I haven't read the book or seen the movie, but I do know what it's about and I like the idea of reading a remake of a classic. Plus that cover is so pretty O__0
The Wrath and The Dawn is like THE book to read right now. It's going to be so good... I want it.. *cue whining*

Of Metal and Wishes was such a great Book! I am mildly obsessed with the Phantom of the Opera, so I HAD to read it. Happily, it did not disappoint! And as for The Wrath and The Dawn... I loved that book. Hope you get to read it soon!

  • Awesome list! I agree I have never really thought about what a beach read is, I always just go with some books that I have really been wanting to read. Honestly all of the books that you listed are on my TBR so you have some great taste in my humble opinion. :)

5 to 1 and the Wrath of Dawn seem like some pretty good ones to be reading in my opinion! I guess the definition of a beach read changes for every person? Mine is usually a quick read so it's not too heavy in my bag which is crammed with all the other beach stuff.

Ooh, that's a good definition! Some books really are heavy. And I'm not a huge kindle reader, so that actually matters to me. :)
