Book-to-Film: The Odyssey by Homer

From Book Riot:

Director Francis Lawerence, writer Peter Craig, and producer Nina Jacobson, who previously worked together on The Hunger Games films, have been hired by Lionsgate to work on a film adaption of Homer’s The Odyssey. The project is expected to begin production after promotion for Mockingjay Part 2 has finished.

I guess it's been a while since an Odyssey film has been made, and since just about every ninth grader in the country reads this story, it might be a good idea to update the film.  Also, is it just me or does it somehow seem fitting that the same people who brought us The Hunger Games bring us The Odyssey?

What are your thoughts?  Did you read this book in school?  Did you enjoy it?  Did you watch the old 90s Odyssey film?  Would you be interested in seeing this adaptation?

  1. It's definitely been awhile since we've seen an adaption of this one. I just hope it turns out good. Far too often they end up being really hokey.

This book is really weird, if you ask me. There's no story arc. It's just random events happening in succession. So it will be hard to make a film that holds my attention, if it follows the book too closely. But I am curious enough about the project to follow casting announcements. :)

  • Seriously!?!? I'm so excited! I haven't seen a movie that has done this justice! I hope they do a good job! I think this book would be better a mini-series, but I'm still excited.

Oooh, I think a mini-series might have been the better way to go as well. We'll just have to wait and see how this one goes!

  • This is the only book I every read Cliff's Notes for in school. Every time I tried to read it put me to sleep. :) I liked "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" though.

I forgot about O Brother Where Art Thou! I liked that one too, though it is obviously very different from its source material. I'm hoping they take just as many liberties with this one.
